Plant Swwwwwwwwwap

All of my plants have died due to dehydration or have been eaten by my cats, but hopefully this will interest you…
Hello Hawks,
As we start turning our attention to the great outdoors several of us have been talking about swapping some of our garden plants with each other. Similar to a cookie swap, you bring something to swap with others; preferably extra things growing in your garden or possibly even purchased plants from a nursery.
If this is something that interests you please let me know by May 8th so we have an idea of how many people are swapping.
We would meet at my house in Warrington on Sunday May 18th, around 2:00. Keeping in mind the Hawks tradition, we will be drinking beer in the hot tub rather than eating finger cookies on the veranda.
Our ‘master gardener’ for the event will be Nancy Mcguire who is a whiz at identifying plants as well as providing helpful tips to those of us who are relatively new to the sport of gardening.
I will be away for a few days returning on May 5th, please feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions.
yours in hockey,
Linda

The Hawks Fly North for Winter

Alright back to blogging.

Day 1: January 31, 2008

On January 31, 2008, most of the D squad woke up early and started their 8 hour journey to Ottawa.

By 4pm all of the crew arrived up North. While the extra early birds were already skating, the rest of team trekked their way to the frozen canal to enjoy some skating.

As seen below, Lea Pennington enjoys her warm beavertail on the canal.

After a quick skate, the team enjoyed a little time to rest, have a beer, or ice their bruises!!! Teammates Tracey Churray and Deb Nowicki came back from the canal with some battle wounds.

Tracey Churray explains her meeting with the ice, ” I wasn’t really watching the ice, and next thing i knew i was face first in front of a group of people. I smacked my knee and my elbows, and wound up with a nice egg on my knee for the rest of the trip.”

Remember folks, there are no Zambonis on outside surfaces.

Soon enough, the team gathered for the Senators/Bruins game at the Scotiabank Place. Judi’s son, Jamie helped the Hawks navigate the bus system to the arena.

The Hawks trounced through the area and missed the first Bruins goal, some missed the second, but overall it was a good game. The sens lost 4-1.

After a long day, all the Hawks went back to their respective nests and went to sleep.

Pictured below is the canal at night..

Day 2: February 1, 2008
When the Hawks peaked out of their nests for the morning, they awakened to snow, and lots of it. There wasn’t too much time for moseying around, for the Hawks had a hockey date with the ladies of the Kanata Hockey Club.

At least that was the plan, until a slight breakdown of communication occured. You see, ten or so Hawks traveled to the rink 2 miles from the hotel, but the other 4 with some of their teammates hockey bags drove to the other rink, 17 miles away!

Nancy McGuire with the navigational skills of Tracey Churray attempted to get to the rink ASAP, but there was a slight problem, a FOOT of snow!!

Being in the runaway van myself, I’d like to say that each Hawk played a cruitial role in the battle of the snow. Nancy drove, Tracey navigated, Lisa (myself) cursed up a storm, and Brenda knitted a hat.

Yes, I wrote that correctly.

So FINALLY, the coolest van in the world arrives at the rink with the equipment. The game already started, but it wasn’t the same. Something was awry.

Sitting on the bench, i don’t see a scoreboard with the period and clock on it. I see a 45 minute running clock. Apparently, this crew plays a 45 minute running clock and you can’t change on a whistle, only on the fly. Along with those rules, there was to be no contact what so ever. Not even incidential.

The Hawks fought a tough game, but they were outscored 3-1.

The Hawks played their best while being short benched at the start of the game and adjusting to new rules. Judi Elliot received the player of the game award, (an Ottawa Sens Jersey) from our competitors!

That evening, the Hawks went their seperate ways. Some, including myself traveled to the Casino du Lac-Leamy. Others enjoyed drinks and darts at the Fox and the Feather pub in Ottawa. Others enjoyed keeping their tootsies warm at the hotel, The Holiday Inn.

A few Hawks enjoyed latenight laughs and Guitar Hero III with Judi’s son, Jaime.

After a late night that traveled to the a.m, all of the Hawkies returned to their nests and rested up for day 3.

Day 3: February 2, 2008
Day three started for some Hawks at 8am!! A few Hawks traveled to the inner tube slopes and slides which was part of the winterlude festival.

A few other Hawks woke up and skated on the Canal, and I mean skated, like 2.5 miles skated, or was that kilometers? I think they also witnessed some inuit throat singers. Whatever they sound like, I don’t know, and I don’t have a guess.

Ask Joanna Lyman about how she checked a woman with a baby carriage!! She is vicious on and off the ice!

Pictured above is the baby checker in bare feet!!

Tracey and I traveled over to the Winterlude ice sculptures/Crystal Garden. We witnessed the blocks of ice being carved into amazing pieces of art. We also devoured maple syrup taffies. YUM YUM YUM!

and this was all before a game….

Take 2 Game Night
This time around all of the Hawkies rounded up and moseyed our way to the correct rink in Kanata! Notice I am not mentioning what I ate for dinner. ugh. yeck.

The team suited up and marched onto the ice ready to play by their rules, but it seems like the referee didnt really see that the other team was playing by our rules!! Grr…There were some pentalties called the most noticeable being Tracey as she checked an opponent into the boards. Bad Tracey!

The Hawks played an awesome game. They changed on the fly like professionals. Unfortunately, The Hawks ended up losing by a close margin of 1-0.

Linda McGuigan made her debut back from injury and played like her injury never occurred!

As Nancy Mills would say, “Go Mom!”

Cindy saved shot after shot, only allowing one goal.

For Cindy’s performance, she earned the Player of the Game Award. Go Cindy!

After the game, the Hawkies grabbed a late night dinner, well except for Judi, who wasn’t hungry. (hehehe, the waitress forgot her dinner) The Hawkies chatted and laughed with the Women of the Kanata Hockey Club. Before we knew it, the time read 1:30 am.

The Hawks traveled back to the Holiday Inn, a couple shared a drink or two while the other Hawkies tucked themselves into their nests for the 8 hour drive home in the am.

Day 4: February 3, 2008

The Hawkies flew home, but not without memories and laughs that will last a lifetime!

Overall, I give this trip and the trip organizer, 2 thumbs up!

Thanks to all who made the trip. Each one of you made this mini-vacation a special one.

Back from Vacation… All-star news, Weekend Games, etc

Okay, I’m not going to lie, i really wasn’t on vacation, but the holidays consumed my life, so now, It’s back to reality, back to hockey.

C and D teams have practice tonight at face off at 9:30 pm. Practice is important, so try and be there.

Both the C team and the D team have big weekends coming up. The C team travels to play the S. Jersey Demons on Saturday for a 10:45 am league match up.

The D Squad suits up twice on Saturday for double header action. First the D squad plays the Americans in Aston at 4:15pm and then face the Blades at home at 8:55 pm in non-league play.

Then on Sunday, January 6 at 2pm, Nancy Mills, Jacky Foley, Judy McCauley, and myself, Lisa Larkin, take the Wachovia Spectrum ice in the UWHL all-star game. The game takes place before the Phantoms Game.

If you don’t have a ticket and still want to go, there’s still time. Contact the Phantoms ticket office and purchase tickets for the game. Mention that you want to sit w/the UWHL.

And, in case you want to know, all Hawks are on the Blue Team. If you want to know more information, you can check the www.uwhl.org website.

Here’s more information on the game via e-mail from the league:

Happy New Year,
The roster for the ASG will be posted shortly on the web site. Please inform your players what team they are on, white or blue. We will take a roll call & let the players know on Sunday what team they are on. All players, coaches, volunteers, refs must be at the Spectrum by 1:00pm sharp! You will pay to park & need your ticket to get in. Enter at the north entrance & the parking attendant will direct you where to park & where to enter the rink. We will go to the locker rooms at 1:30pm sharp & the puck drops at 2:00pm. We will play three 20 min periods with a 5 min warm up & one min. break btw periods.
All fans can sit center ice behind the players benches. The rink is open but no one is permitted to wander around the other areas of the spectrum untill close to the Phantoms game time which is at 5:05pm. We will supply jerseys, pucks & water bottles. After the game, players can shower, quickly, then go to Bullies to eat before the Phantoms game. Please stick around & watch the Phantoms game as we will all be sitting in the same section to represent the UWHL. Have your team mates wear their team jerseys to make a good impression & support the growing sport of womens ice hockey.

The D Hawks are taking a mid-season vacation to Canada’s Capital, Ottawa, Ontario from Jan 31, 2008-February 3, 2008.

The Winterlude, seeing the Sens play, and playing on the ice where the sens play at the Scotiabank Centre, previously named the Correl Centre are on the itenerary.

The event Winterlude takes place in Ottawa, the festival includes crazy ice carvings, an ice skating “rink” which goes on for miles, and even a playground made of snow.

Oh and we get to meet the ice hogs.

ice hogs

If you haven’t responded to Judi’s e-mail or seen it yet, here it is:

We were in Ottawa in a snowstorm ,and I took the time to check out some hotels . I have a couple of choices to offer and    will bring the info this week . Looks like we will be staying within walking distance of the canal and all the sights of the Canadian capital. Should be a good spot. I will also be asking for a deposit of 50$ for the trip which will go toward the hotel costs. Please let me know how many nights are needed and who is sharing rooms. The general plan is to go up on Thursday am, so we can take in the Sens vrs Buins game (let me know who needs tickets asap). Friday is skating on the canal , the ice sculptures , seeing the sights of the city and an exibition game at the Correl Center where the Senators play. This will be confirmed a month in advance. Saturday night we have a game in the suburbs … something about a few beer, since we are in Canada…and home on Sunday . I will get some info on dogsledding if there is interest in that.
Pray for snow… Judi

If you’re going, get back to Judi, folks.

uwhl all-star game 1/06/2008

Quick get your palm pilot and block off January 6, 2008 for the UWHL all-star game played at the Wachovia Spectrum. Each team selected a forward and a defenseman to represent their respective teams. The C team selected Jacky Foley (F) and Michelle McCauley (D). The D team selected Lisa Larkin (F) and Nancy Mills (D).

Unfortunately because 21 teams make up the UWHL, not all players that are selected by their teams will play in the game. The UWHL will randomly select players for their rosters. At least one player from each team will play with no more than 2 playing.  Keep your fingers crossed that the four Hawks selected get the chance to play!!

The all-star game takes place before the phantoms game which starts at 5:05 pm on 1/6/08.  More details to follow on times. Tickets are $15 a piece which includes a ticket to the Phantoms game. Please pay your team league rep. Money is due December 12, 2007.

Even if you are not playing, the game will be a blast. If you are new to the Hawks Organization, this is a great chance to hang out with your teammates off the ice!!

Questions? Ask your rep. If they don’t know, ask someone else.
