Alright back to blogging.
Day 1: January 31, 2008
On January 31, 2008, most of the D squad woke up early and started their 8 hour journey to Ottawa.
By 4pm all of the crew arrived up North. While the extra early birds were already skating, the rest of team trekked their way to the frozen canal to enjoy some skating.
As seen below, Lea Pennington enjoys her warm beavertail on the canal.

After a quick skate, the team enjoyed a little time to rest, have a beer, or ice their bruises!!! Teammates Tracey Churray and Deb Nowicki came back from the canal with some battle wounds.
Tracey Churray explains her meeting with the ice, ” I wasn’t really watching the ice, and next thing i knew i was face first in front of a group of people. I smacked my knee and my elbows, and wound up with a nice egg on my knee for the rest of the trip.”
Remember folks, there are no Zambonis on outside surfaces.
Soon enough, the team gathered for the Senators/Bruins game at the Scotiabank Place. Judi’s son, Jamie helped the Hawks navigate the bus system to the arena.
The Hawks trounced through the area and missed the first Bruins goal, some missed the second, but overall it was a good game. The sens lost 4-1.
After a long day, all the Hawks went back to their respective nests and went to sleep.
Pictured below is the canal at night..

Day 2: February 1, 2008
When the Hawks peaked out of their nests for the morning, they awakened to snow, and lots of it. There wasn’t too much time for moseying around, for the Hawks had a hockey date with the ladies of the Kanata Hockey Club.
At least that was the plan, until a slight breakdown of communication occured. You see, ten or so Hawks traveled to the rink 2 miles from the hotel, but the other 4 with some of their teammates hockey bags drove to the other rink, 17 miles away!
Nancy McGuire with the navigational skills of Tracey Churray attempted to get to the rink ASAP, but there was a slight problem, a FOOT of snow!!

Being in the runaway van myself, I’d like to say that each Hawk played a cruitial role in the battle of the snow. Nancy drove, Tracey navigated, Lisa (myself) cursed up a storm, and Brenda knitted a hat.
Yes, I wrote that correctly.
So FINALLY, the coolest van in the world arrives at the rink with the equipment. The game already started, but it wasn’t the same. Something was awry.
Sitting on the bench, i don’t see a scoreboard with the period and clock on it. I see a 45 minute running clock. Apparently, this crew plays a 45 minute running clock and you can’t change on a whistle, only on the fly. Along with those rules, there was to be no contact what so ever. Not even incidential.
The Hawks fought a tough game, but they were outscored 3-1.
The Hawks played their best while being short benched at the start of the game and adjusting to new rules. Judi Elliot received the player of the game award, (an Ottawa Sens Jersey) from our competitors!
That evening, the Hawks went their seperate ways. Some, including myself traveled to the Casino du Lac-Leamy. Others enjoyed drinks and darts at the Fox and the Feather pub in Ottawa. Others enjoyed keeping their tootsies warm at the hotel, The Holiday Inn.
A few Hawks enjoyed latenight laughs and Guitar Hero III with Judi’s son, Jaime.
After a late night that traveled to the a.m, all of the Hawkies returned to their nests and rested up for day 3.
Day 3: February 2, 2008
Day three started for some Hawks at 8am!! A few Hawks traveled to the inner tube slopes and slides which was part of the winterlude festival.
A few other Hawks woke up and skated on the Canal, and I mean skated, like 2.5 miles skated, or was that kilometers? I think they also witnessed some inuit throat singers. Whatever they sound like, I don’t know, and I don’t have a guess.
Ask Joanna Lyman about how she checked a woman with a baby carriage!! She is vicious on and off the ice!

Pictured above is the baby checker in bare feet!!
Tracey and I traveled over to the Winterlude ice sculptures/Crystal Garden. We witnessed the blocks of ice being carved into amazing pieces of art. We also devoured maple syrup taffies. YUM YUM YUM!
and this was all before a game….
Take 2 Game Night
This time around all of the Hawkies rounded up and moseyed our way to the correct rink in Kanata! Notice I am not mentioning what I ate for dinner. ugh. yeck.
The team suited up and marched onto the ice ready to play by their rules, but it seems like the referee didnt really see that the other team was playing by our rules!! Grr…There were some pentalties called the most noticeable being Tracey as she checked an opponent into the boards. Bad Tracey!
The Hawks played an awesome game. They changed on the fly like professionals. Unfortunately, The Hawks ended up losing by a close margin of 1-0.
Linda McGuigan made her debut back from injury and played like her injury never occurred!
As Nancy Mills would say, “Go Mom!”
Cindy saved shot after shot, only allowing one goal.
For Cindy’s performance, she earned the Player of the Game Award. Go Cindy!
After the game, the Hawkies grabbed a late night dinner, well except for Judi, who wasn’t hungry. (hehehe, the waitress forgot her dinner) The Hawkies chatted and laughed with the Women of the Kanata Hockey Club. Before we knew it, the time read 1:30 am.
The Hawks traveled back to the Holiday Inn, a couple shared a drink or two while the other Hawkies tucked themselves into their nests for the 8 hour drive home in the am.
Day 4: February 3, 2008
The Hawkies flew home, but not without memories and laughs that will last a lifetime!

Overall, I give this trip and the trip organizer, 2 thumbs up!
Thanks to all who made the trip. Each one of you made this mini-vacation a special one.
What you have to say…
